Prior to taking this course, students should be familiar with basic welding processes and welding terminology. This prerequisite knowledge can be obtained by:
- Taking the AWS Welding Fundamentals I online course
- Obtaining and reading a copy of AWS A3.0 Standard Terms and Definitions and ANSI Z49.1 Safety in Welding, Cutting, and Allied Processes
This course teaches students how to:
- Identify common safety hazards in welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering
- Choose proper PPE to avoid common hazards
- Apply best practices to avoid safety hazards
Upon completion of Welding Safety, students will be able to:
- Understand the importance of welding safety and identify welding safety guidelines
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in welding safety
- Explain the different types of radiation and discuss radiation hazards encountered in the welding shop
- Analyze the various ways in which radiation can affect the eyes and explain several strategies to protect against radiation exposure
- Understand how, when, and why electricity poses a risk to welders and describe the effects of electric shock on the human body
- Identify measures to prevent electric shock in the workplace and develop a plan of action for situations involving electrical injuries
- Explain how fire works and identify potential sources of fire in welding and cutting
- Describe the differences between first-, second-, third-, and fourth-degree burns and the precautions designed to keep people and property safe from fire
- Describe how fumes and gases are produced during the welding process and identify hazardous fumes and gases commonly found in the welding workplace, as well as their health effects
- Explain measures that must be taken to safeguard against the toxic effects of fumes and gases
- Explain the causes and effects of noise hazards and describe steps that can be taken to avoid noise hazards
- Discuss the potential hazards of the welding workplace and how they can be managed
- Explain the safety responsibilities of employers and employees
- Identify personal protective equipment and their significance
- Explain how to manage environmental hazards in the workplace
- Analyze appropriate measures for avoiding ventilation hazards
- Describe the hazards involved with working in confined spaces
- Choose safety measures and standards to better avoid welding hazards
- Identify the various hazards associated with the oxyfuel welding and cutting processes and discuss the safety measures involved in the use, maintenance, and storage of basic oxyfuel process equipment
- Understand what to do in case of leaks or fire while performing oxyfuel welding or cutting
- Identify the various hazards associated with arc welding and cutting processes and discuss how to safely utilize, maintain, and store basic arc welding equipment
- Choose the best safety practices for arc welding
- Identify the safety equipment utilized in resistance welding and cutting processes
- Discuss the primary hazards and safety precautions involved in electron beam welding and cutting processes
